Much of the film’s charm comes from the casting, which is well nigh perfect, and the natural performances from veteran actors who were enthusiastically encouraged to improvise and explore their characters more fully. Caton (best known for his role as Uncle Harry in tv’s long running soap The Sullivans) is perfectly cast as Darryl, and he gives a generous and warm performance, maintaining a subtle balance of understated humour and quiet strength. Tiriel Mora is marvellous as Dennis Denuto, the small time lawyer and family friend who finds himself out of his depth when dealing with the complexities of constitutional law and high powered corporate lawyers in silk suits, and he brings dishevelled charm and earthy humour to the film in a scene stealing performance. Veteran Charles (Bud) Tingwell, an old favourite who found a whole new audience through his collaborations with the film’s writers on The Late Show, brings dignity and intelligence to his role as Lawrence Hamilton, the retired QC who takes the Kerrigan’s fight all the way to the High Court.

by GREG KING“I think that years go by quicker as you get older,” tells writer and director of Any Questions For Ben? Rob Sitch, the first feature film from the Working Dog team (The Castle, The Dish) in over a decade. When asked why it has taken so long for them to create a new feature, Sitch, who co-wrote the film with his usual collaborators Santo Cilauro and Tom Gleisner, explains that other things just seemed to take priority. All of them now have familie, but they were also working on other projects, including Thank God You’re Here and the ABC series Hollow Men.

This essay takes the late Robert Cover's insight that "No set of legal institutions or prescriptions exists apart from the narratives that locate it and give it meaning," and thus that "For every constitution there is an epic" as the starting point for a reading of Australian legal and literary texts about the relationship of the nation and "outsiders," as between constitutional subjects and texts. Ranging from "legal faction" texts Evil Angels (about the "Dingo Baby" case) and "Dark Victory" (about the Tampa incident) and "The Castle", Rob Sitch's filmic satire on the Australian takings clause and the landmark Native Title Decision, Mabo v. Queensland, No 2, to the recent High Court cases Al Kateb, Behrooz, Re Woolley, and Ruhan, it offers a critical account of recent Australian constitutional jurisprudence regarding asylum seekers and "sexually violent predators." The essay argues that this recent High Court jurisprudence offers a radically circumscribed reading of Chapter III judicial power (analogous to Article III judicial power in the U.S. Constitutional context), and offers comparative constitutional law perspectives on problems in U.S. Constitutional hermeneutics.

Australian Films are renowned for their quirky, representation of character, often using exaggeration to illustrate something important about the unique nature of Australian cultural identity. The 1997 film The castle, produced by Rob Sitch, is about Darryl Kerrigan, an Aussie battler fighting for his home as they have been told they must move out by the airport authorities. The film explores the chain of events the Kerrigan family has to face and how they overcome them. The movie employs the use of a range of techniques to construct the characters of Darryl, his sons and Lawrence Hamill, the barrister. Each of these characters is a prime representation of Australians.
